Expert Workshop on Environmental Indicators of Sustainable Development planned for late October 1998.
14 September 1998 - The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism is assisting the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) in testing the list of 134 indicators of sustainable development proposed by the CSD. Following from testing in 1997, the workshop will focus on the 50 + environmental indicators in the CSD list.

Work on indicators
The UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) has developed a set of Indicators of Sustainable Development. The aim of the work by the CSD on the development of indicators is to provide governments, as quickly as possible, with a set of indicators which they can use as a basis for collecting data and begin to analyze progress towards sustainable development along several dimensions. The CSD asked countries to test the list of indicators. South Africa, through the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, is participating in the testing programme of the CSD.
  • A list of 30 urban indicators to be used by cities participating in the Cities State of the Environment Project is available at the cities web page of Grid Arendal.
