HOW FLAMMABLE IS YOUR TENT?

Three-day weekends, long summer vacations and school breaks are rapidly approaching. Camping season is upon us, or will be soon. It is time to break out the camping gear, dust off that tent and hit the road.

Most tents will burn so remember to keep all sources of heat or flames away from the tent. Do not cook inside your tent. Save that for your wonderful campfire, which will be at least 4 metres upwind from your tent. Housekeeping isn't only for the home. Maintain an area of at least 1 meter around your grills, fireplaces and tents clear of dry grass, pine needles, dead leaves.

Scared of the dark? Use a battery operated light in your tent. Keep it handy for those late night excursions.

Thoroughly extinguish your campfire, cooking fire, stoves or lanterns before leaving the campsite or before retiring for the evening.

Supervise children at all times, especially when they are near the fire. Should the need arise, stop, drop and roll are effective to extinguish clothing fires.

Remember to check with your park and/or forest ranger for any local rules that may apply to your selected camp site. Always abide by any posted regulations. A ranger will also give you updated weather information.

Leave only footsteps; take only memories!
