NAMIBIA
EDITION ONE: HITCH-HIKING
This page is dedicated to all of you that is sitting in front of your computer, and keeping down a high-stress job.
HITCH-HIKING
Namibia is an INCREDIBLY EASY country to hitch-hike!!! Most people in the tourism industry will tell you otherwise, but then they have to sell tours, safaris and rent out cars.
All you need is some time, a water bottle, a hat, a book, a good sleeping bag, a thick jacket, boots and a tin of baked beans.
In Namibia you will not find the paranoia that is associated with hitch-hiking in places such as South Africa or the USA. Namibians are hitch-hiker friendly, and very proud of their country!!!!! Thus, the general attitude is to be hospitable to travellers and to show them why we love to live in this country of vast emptiness.
When you travel in the "out-back" rural areas, you might not see a car for a whole day, but the first car that comes past WILL pick you up! In the mean time you will be able to absorb the very strange beauty of your surroundings and the local people and their habits.........and through seeing this strange beauty, you might find another meaning in life.
Should you be picked up by a black driver, you will normally have to make a donation towards petrol (just ask how much). White drivers will take you along for free, but often you will have to cope with: " I am not a racist, but........."
In my opinion, hitch-hiking is the best !!!!
Remember the golden rule: if you do not like the look of the driver, make an excuse and do not get into the car......it is your right!
