Cape Records Anniversary Celebrations
Unveiling of a Plaque at the Site of Wingfield Aerodrome
Alex Henshaw has very kindly agreed to officiate at the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the 60th anniversary of his historic Cape Flight, which established solo records for the journey from London to Cape Town which still stand in 1999.
Wingfield was in 1939 the main aerodrome serving Cape Town, and was used for both military and civilian purposes. It was at that time under the management of Colonel George Fisher of the South African Air Force. Wingfield is no longer used as an airfield, and is currently under the jurisdiction of the South African Navy.
G-AEXF landing at Wingfield Aerodrome, 20h58, 6th February 1939.
The unveiling ceremony is provisionally scheduled for 10AM on Friday 26th November 1999.
