Brett Murray was born in Pretoria, studied art at Stellenbosch university
and now resides and works in Cape Town. Brett works mainly in metal and
plastics, creating wall sculptures and lights that comment on the "rich
and unique irony, particular and peculiar to South Africa."
In
1992 he established the sculpture department at Stellenbosch University.
As
well as curating various exhibitions around South Africa including, most
notably "40 Sculptures of the Western Cape", Brett also exhibited
at the Venice Bienalle, the Cuban Bienalle and at the Frankfurt, Cologne
and Basel Art Fairs. In 1998 he won the Urban Arts Foundation Public Sculpture
Competition for a work soon to be erected in the centre of Cape Town.
However
before bulbs there was always beer. Sharing a passion for the brew with
many others albeit those that could pay, Brett quickly ran up a rather
large tab at a local club known only as "the Lounge". The establishment,
fortunately was owned and run by friends and to pay off his debt, Brett
created a series of iconic wall lights to decorate the interior. Response
was dramatic, so much so that within weeks a steady flow of orders began
to pour in and the now famous lights of Brett Murray were officially born.
Since
then, sales have accelerated and now Brett supplies outlets across South
Africa as well as in Berlin and New York.
The
lights are all handmade in a combination of black metal and coloured plastic.
Their popularity is unsurpassed and their full effect when alight must
be seen to be appreciated.
