I
was a postgraduate student in the department of
German. The topic of my
Ph.D. thesis is: "Nietzsches Begriff der décadence:
Kritik und Analyse der Moderne" ["Nietzsches
concept of decadence: Critique and analysis of
modernism"]. I am currently a post-doc supported by an Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stipendium. I do research on Jean Paul at the Technische Universität Berlin. My research focus is on early 19th century (Jean Paul), late 19th century (Nietzsche) and modern and contemporary German literature. My current research on Jean Paul concentrates on his relation to 18th century literature. Apart from my Ph.D. on Nietzsche, which deals with the intellectual history of the concept "decadence" in the 19th century, and my current research on Jean Paul, which will deal with Jean Paul's reception of British philosophy and psychology (Hume, Locke), I have written on German literature of the twentieth century, including work on contemporary literature (Verena Stefan,Anna Seghers,Uwe Timm, Jürgen Fuchs, Robert Musil, Franz Kafka,Elias Canetti). I am interested in theory, gender studies, and in intellectual history across national boundaries. |

I
am also interested in South African literature. I served
as regional secretary of the Congress of South African
Writers, co-edited a book of South African women's
literature, Like a House on Fire, and have written
articles and reviews of South African writers. If your are interested in South African literature, then have a look at the UCT Poetry Web and at the Lansdowne Review of South African Literature |
