What courses are available?
Training in the following courses is provided by full time instructors
as well as pilots from SAA and the SAAF.
Private pilot licence
Course requirements are a minimum of 50 total flying hours including 15 solo hours and 3 cross country hours together with a written examination covering air law, navigation, meteorology and principals of flight. Eight lectures are held at the school in the evenings. To go solo the medical, plus two written examens on Air law and the R22 technical are required for a student pilot licence.
The course which may be done part time or full time (in 4-6 weeks) is
accompanied by thorough pre and post flight briefings. A radio operator´s
licence is also required and may be obtained by attending 4 evening lectures.
This enables you to fly with passengers, internationally, but not for gain.
Commercial helicopter licence
A further 150 hours and two examinations controlled by the Department
of Civil Aviation are required in addition to the private pilot licence.
Passengers may be carried during this time.
Instructor's rating
20 hours of instructor's training together with theoretical exams are
required after having obtained the commercial license.
Conversion to any piston and turbine helicopter
To operate other helicopters a short conversion course of at least 10
instructed hours and a written conversion test should be completed.
Advanced courses towards commercial or higher ratings can be undertaken.
