The Robertson R22 Beta helicopter used for initial training is a two seater piston engined helicopter. It is used worlwide for helicopter instruction, due to its high performance, best efficiency, low coast and extreme manoeuvrability. R22 pilots develop their skills to a high standard and are easily able to fly other helicopters after completing the short conversion course.

The R22 Beta is a fast, light helicopter for general aviation. The entire design is optimised for reliabiltiy, reduced maintenance and low operating costs. Its clean aerodynamic design allows a cruise speed of 110 mph and an overall fuel consumption of less than 8 gallons-per-hour (13 miles per gallon), making it the world's most efficient helicopter.

Despite its low cost, the R22 Beta outperforms all other helicopters with reciprocating engines in its class. The entire design has been based on optimum efficiency in rotary wing technology. It is perfectly suited for training.

The Beta's 96-knot cruising speed is claimed to be the fasted of any piston-powered helicopter. As the R22 is a light two seater helicopter, it is possible to derate the 160 HP engine to 124 HP maximum continous power - one of the reason why the time between overhauls is 2000 hours, the highest of any piston-engined helicopter. Very little routine attention is required otherwise, and only one mandatory periodic inspection per 100 hours is necessary.

The R22 Beta has an optional 10,9 gallon auxiliary fuel tank that increases usable fuel to 29,7 gallons thus extending the no reserve range from 208 to 320 nautical miles. A five minute take off power rating af 131 hp enables the Beta to hover out of ground effect up to 5200 feet.

The Robinson R22 Beta is both affordable and effective - and is in fact the most efficient light helicopter available today.
