MEANING
In olden times names usually were an indication of some special circumstance connected with the birth of an individual or the family. In history certain names stand out as representing the best and the worst in humanity; great victories in battle, adventures on land, or sea, in space and in great discoveries, etc..
The recall of some names inspire to greatness in valour, diligence, truth and honour while others only stir within us fear and revulsion at the depths of cruelty and depravity to which humans can sink.
ABOVE ALL NAMES one stands out as the most feared and revered, most misrepresented and abused, yet best known and loved in all the world - THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.
His name divides history and even destiny for eternity. NO OTHER NAME has been so well known by so many people, and when all other names have disappeared forever, His name will shine forth from the Throne of God forever. (Rev. 5:12,13 for example.)
UNIQUE
Jesus Christ as the ONLY - BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD, (1 John 4: 9) the ONLY ACCEPTABLE SACRIFICE for sin, (Heb 9: 26; 10: 12) the ONLY MEANS OF APPROACH to God (1Tim 2: 5)
IS UNIQUE
He has no intermediaries, needs no helpers and tolerates no rivals, which make Him unacceptable to multitudes.
Therefore, men under the direction of deceiving spirits, have devised their own acceptable christs.
So to the Hindu He is another god among millions.
To the Moslem He is a prophet inferior to Mohammed.
To the Jehovahs Witnesses He is another god also an angel.
To the Morman He is a bigamist with at least 3 wives.
To the Liberal Christian He is an embarrassment. To organised religion He is, in the main, a figurehead without real authority. To many others He is an unapproachable spirit, far away in the heavens and so needing intermediaries to make an approach to Him. To the New Ager He is a cosmic force or energy. But to the Bible-believing Christian (and there aren.t any Bible rejecting ones), He is Saviour, Redeemer, Protector - in short. He is all that we read of Him in Isaiah 9: 6, "WONDERFUL, COUNSELLOR, MIGHTY GOD, EVERLASTING FATHER, PRINCE OF PEACE." "At the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE Shall bow and EVERY TONGUE CONFESS that Jesus Christ is Lord." (Phil. 2: 10, Isa. 45: 23, Rom. 14: 10,11) How happy and safe are those whose faith is in Him!
MYSTERY
The Union of Father, Son and Holy Spirit in the Godhead is a mystery beyond human comprehension. Because finite minds cannot fully understand the infinite, many have erred greatly in interpreting such great mysteries on mere human and rational basis. For example: God said of Jesus "This is my beloved Son," and the inspired writers of the New Testament often referred to Him as the only begotten Son of God. (John 1: 18; 3: 16; Heb. 11: 17, etc..) But on THE BASIS OF HUMAN REASONING Moslems say, "How can God have a Son?" So vigorously do they oppose such a thought that in the porch of the mosque on the Rock in Jerusalem is written, "Cursed is he who proclaims that Jesus is the Son of God." . Mormons have no problem here. They teach that "As we are now, God once was" and that He has "a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's and as such, "God joined with a mortal woman and bore a son after the manner of the flesh" - Jesus. .Jehovahs Witnesses just ignore what God says and they say that before coming to earth, Jesus was Michael the Archangel.
SURE TO ERR
To try to understand eternal, divine, spiritual realities on the basis of human understanding always leads into gross error and heresy.
This is where faith comes in; if God says it, we believe it. If church leaders believed the Word of God they could save days, even years of debate, and could use time spreading the truth to an anxious, seeking world.
MOST FEARED
THE NAME OF JESUS is feared by men and demons. We read in James 2: 19 "devils believe and tremble."
They always had to obey Jesus' command and leave the people they had possessed (Mark 5: 1-15 for example)
They feared their final doom and knew Jesus had power to execute it. "You Son of God, are you come here to torment us before the time." (Matt. 8: 29)
In His death and resurrection JESUS TRIUMPHED OVER EVIL MEN AND DEMONS. (Colossians 2: 15,15)
FEARED BY MEN
Moslems so fear His Name that they go to all lengths to prevent His Name being proclaimed in Moslem lands. Even in Britain the former Archbishop of Canterbury joined Moslems in protest against the franking of letters at Easter 1988 with the words "JESUS IS ALIVE," but when the franking was on behalf of the MORMONS in 1987 we never heard any protest - why?
Because Satan doesn't have any reason to fear them; he fears only THE RISEN, LIVING, REIGNING JESUS.
MOST ABUSED
WHY is it that people only use the Name of Jesus in cursing and swearing? Why not use the names of Mohammed, Krishna, Buddha etc.?
WHY is it that only the name and person of Jesus is so dragged in the vilest gutters that degraded minds can imagine?
WHY do so many writers concentrate on lying, degrading stories about Jesus?
WHY are such vile portrayals of Jesus presented on stage, screen, video and rock music?
But never do we see presentations of mockery of the heathen gods or the false prophets - why?
WHY is His name excluded from multifaith gatherings?
WHY is it that even in many so-called Christian lands you can join the Mormons, JW's, Hare Krishna., etc., become an alcoholic or drug addict and nobody cares very much but if YOU SURRENDER YOUR LIFE TO JESUS CHRIST, get your life cleaned up, and witness to Jesus as your Saviour and Lord, in many cases you will be abused, shunned, mocked and evil spoken of: WHY?
The answer is that all this anti-Christ propaganda is inspired by Satan because JESUS IS THE ONLY NAME HE FEARS and hates and therefore inspires his servants to use their skills to turn as many as possible away from following Jesus.
A CHOICE
Thus far it is WHAT OTHERS THINK of Jesus we've been considering, but in the end as far as you are concerned, it matters not what THEY think; the all-important question is WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HIM?
Knowing in advance that He would be thus abused, "despised, rejected" and slain, (Isiaiah 53) why did He come? It was LOVE BROUGHT HIM here, LOVE HELD HIM on the cross, not the nails, and His love reaches out to you today saying, "Come unto me, you who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest." (Mat. 11: 28)
You may be very religious but if your hope of heaven is based on your religion or your good life then it is a false hope. Or if you have made a hopeless mess of your life you need not despair because Jesus died as a sacrifice for all sin and if you repent He will forgive, cleanse, renew and give you a bright hope for the future and for eternity.
YOUR ONLY HOPE
Peter sums it up thus: "THERE IS NO OTHER NAME UNDER HEAVEN given to men, by which we must be saved" (Acts 4: 12)
