Feeding Scheme for Disadvantaged Pupils

The South African Government provides feeding for disadvantaged pupils in primary schools, but not for pupils in Pre-Primary or Secondary Schools, where the need is sometimes equally great. Pretoria Sunrise began a pupil feeding scheme in July 2006 after Rotarians from New York had visited some schools around Pretoria. The Matching Grant Partner was the Rotary Club of Pleasantville, New York

The financial contributions to the project were:

DONORAMOUNT
Pretoria Sunrise Rotary Club:US$ 500
District 9250 Dedicated Fund:US$ 750
Rotary Club of Pleasantville: US$ 13000
District 7230:US$ 1000
District 7470:US$ 15000
The Rotary Foundation:US$ 23500
TotalUS$ 53750
The total of US$ 53750, with interest earned in the South African bank account during the course of the project, yielded R 424000 for the purchase of food.

The original project as approved by the Rotary Foundation was intended to run for 3 months, but the funds available permitted the Club to extend the project over a longer time - it had been running for 33 months when it ended in April 2009 with the depletion of the funds.

Five schools with severely disadvantaged pupils benefited from the project initially, and these were reduced to three towards the end of the project. At its peak, the project was serving over 500 meals per day, to pupils selected by their teachers after investigation into their home circumstances.

The Club contracted with a food supply company (AYOS Food) which delivered meals in bulk twice weekly to the schools. This was a reputable company involved in the supply of food to government feeding schemes nationally.

Designated teachers at the schools undertook the final preparation of the food, and its distribution daily at lunchtime to selected needy pupils. The food included bread, margarine, peanut butter, jam, nutritional drink, and nutritional biscuits. At Tshegofatsong and Kungwini, instant porridge (?Eazypap?) was given to the smaller children in the morning.

The teachers submitted the invoices from the food supplier to the Club, which audited them and then paid the supplier.

All the money received and capitalized was spent on food - no money was used to cover administrative costs. Work done by Rotarians in the administration of the scheme was voluntary and without any compensation. The Sunrise Rotary Club members responsible for controlling the project were PDG Chris Pretorius and PP Bebe du Raan.

The original project has now been completed. The children who received the meals flourished, judged by reports from the schools. The schools asked Rotary to continue the scheme and the Club has done so with Club funds and funds from the Rotary Foundation. The need continues and the Club would like to extend the project if it is able to put together another funding package.
