3 Day Tour
Discover some wild, rough and wonderful places in the Western
Cape, far away from the crowds - enjoy this paradise for bird watchers and sea lovers!
Undoubtedly the most original destination
from the Cape! At the Langebaan Lagoon, we enjoy a "Walk and
Talk" with an expert from the West Coast National Park, observe the birds
and enjoy the serenity of nature. We stroll and swim in Kraalbay and go
for a game drive in the Postberg Nature Reserve. Then, off the secluded
beach of Eland's Bay, you can try your skills at crayfishing
(Nov. to May), explore the environment on foot or by 4x4... you may well
be the only visitor in this beautiful and unspoilt area. The next day, there will be ample
time for photos of the abundant bird life in Lambert's Bay.
"Infusing" the famous Rooibos Tea in Clanwilliam
will relax us for our trip back to Cape Town.
The Route:
Day 1: We leave Cape Town early morning. Our first stop is
at the Geelbek Environmental Centre in the West Coast National
Park. A film show prepares you for the morning's excursion, which will last about
1½ hours. Under the guidance of a specialist field guide, we go on a
short trail that will cover a variety of themes: salt marshes and bird
hides, dunes and strandveld vegetation.
(Minimum group size 5 persons).
Later we drive around the picturesque Langebaan Lagoon to Kraalbay.
On a short game drive through the private Postberg Nature Reserve we
might see some springboks, bonteboks, or even the huge Cape
eland. On the Atlantic seaboard we can see the remains of the Pantelis
A. Lemos, an ore-carrier wrecked in 1978.
Back on the sheltered beach of Kraalbay, we can refresh ourselves and
swim in the relatively warm waters of the lagoon, collect sea shells or simply relax and
suntan.
We leave the West Coast National Park and drive to Langebaan, the
"Mecca" for windsurfers and watersports enthusiasts, then pass Saldanha
Bay, the economic centre of the region.
Later in the afternoon we head North to Eland's Bay, where the owners of
the Hotel Eland welcome us with a delicious, and enormous sea-food platter.
When we retire to our rooms we will be lulled to sleep by the sound of big ocean rollers.
Day 2: After breakfast, we embark on
a small traditional fishing boat and go crayfishing (lobster
fishing, in season only). For lunch, our catch will be cooked right there - fresh from the
sea! In the afternoon, we can climb the mountain near Baboon Point and
explore the nearby Verlorenvlei. Weather and time permitting, we may go
for a 4x4 drive along the endless and unspoiled beach, watching the dolphins
jumping in the waves and perhaps spotting some whales in the bay. After
all these outdoor activities, and another generous dinner, we will sleep well!
Day 3: We drive along the coast to Lambert's
Bay, an important fishing harbour of the West Coast. We visit Bird Island,
the home of thousands of Cape Gannets, cormorants, seagulls
and other sea birds as well as penguins.
Then we head inland to Clanwilliam, where we have a light lunch. At the Rooibos
Tea factory, a video will teach us more about this well-known and special
beverage.
We travel back to Cape Town via Citrusdal (in spring we will have time to
admire the carpets of wild flowers), Piketberg and Malmesbury,
reaching home by the end of afternoon.
