Sailing at the Cape of Good Hope

Sailing in Table Bay, Cape Town

SA FlagJoin us for a sunset cruise in Cape Town's Table Bay, a sail around Robben Island or a trip to Clifton and it's sheltered beaches. Or - if you have the stomach - let's sail around the Cape of Good Hope, also referred to as "the Cape of Storms"!

SHIP AHOY !

If you have a soft spot for the sea and a passion for adventure, then social sailing is probably for you! It doesn't matter if you are a novice or an experienced sailor - we have a sailing trip to suit you (no sailing experience required)! Trips on our comfortable yacht SANGOMA, a TOSCA 39, take from 2 hours to several days.

We encourage our guests to take an active part in sailing: You may help to hoist and trim the sails, grind the winches and - if you like - take a turn at the helm, all under the supervision of our experienced skipper and crew! If you are interested, you will learn a lot about sailing - or simply relax and sail with us into the sunset in Table Bay...

(+/- 3 hours, October to April only)
Wednesday Evening Race in Table BayFor those who like racing and excitement, come on our cruising yacht and take part in the most popular social regatta in Cape Town! After the startgun has fired, you may help trimming the sails or be "ballast" on the weatherrail! You will have ample time to take the most stunning photos of the racing yachts, with Table Mountain and the sunset as a background! The weekly Wednesday evening race is organised by the Royal Cape Yacht Club of Cape Town. Sometimes hectic, sometimes relaxing - but always good sailing and fun! Be prepared to learn the ropes, get wet and return windswept!
After the race we meet at the "South Easter Bar" in the clubhouse to listen to the tales...

Happy sailors on Sunset Cruise in Table BaySUNSET CRUISE IN TABLE BAY
(+/- 3 hours)
We leave the Yacht Club at the end of afternoon and embark on a leisurely sail in Table Bay. Depending on the wind, we sail north towards Bloubergstrand, or if the South Easter is in full force, we head for the more sheltered waters of Sea Point and Granger Bay. Enjoy a good local wine with some snacks and watch the sun sink into the Atlantic Ocean, with the majestic face of Table Mountain and the Mother City as a background - a memorable experience not to be missed!

ROBBEN ISLAND CRUISE (½ day)
We set sail early in the afternoon and head for the famous island, where our former president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 22 years. We sail around the island, where you will see the harbour area and the prison complex (yachts are presently not allowed to moor on the island). After rounding the island we head back to Sea Point and Cape Town. On our way we may try our luck with our angling lines and catch some snoek!
Perfect for photos of Cape Town and Table Mountain!

On anchor at Clifton Beach, Cape TownCLIFTON BEACH (½ day)
On this trip we sail along Granger Bay, Mouille Point and Sea Point to the white sandy beaches of Clifton, where we anchor in the sheltered waters for a relaxing afternoon. You may swim ashore (summer only) and join the holidaymakers frolicking on the beach, or simply relax and suntan while we prepare a gourmet barbecue on board!
Return to Cape Town harbour at sunset. Superb sailing along the prestigious Atlantic Coast of Cape Town...

Cruising in Table BayTABLE BAY (1 day)
For the sailing enthusiast, we set sail early in the morning. Depending on the wind conditions, we head south... or north, and sail around Robben Island or along the West Coast. Good opportunity to learn more about sailing (we will also fish!).

Sailing to Hout BayHOUT BAY - KOMMETJIE (1 day - one way or 2 days - return)
This interesting sailing trip is often blessed with mixed winds along the coast. It will take us 6 to 8 hours to reach the picturesque fishing village of Hout Bay, where we spend the night on board (optional on one way trip). After a hearty breakfast, we sail early in the morning to Slangkop Lighthouse, where we anchor for a while to catch our lunch (Crayfish, also called Rock Lobster, in season only). Thereafter we sail back along the West Coast past Sandy Bay, Camps Bay and Clifton to the Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town.
Also available as a one-day trip, sail from Cape Town to Hout Bay or vice versa.

THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE (2 days for one-way trip, or 3 days for return trip)
Sailing around the Cape of Good HopeOn this trip we circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope, also referred to as the Cape of Storms!
Wind and weather in the Cape Point area can be rather rough - we therefore do not recommend this trip for newcomers to sailing (landlubbers).
Our first leg brings us to Hout Bay (see above). We then continue our exciting experience and round the Cape of Good Hope to sail into False Bay; where we spend the 2nd night on board in Simon's Town. We will do some fishing on the way, and (hopefully) have some fresh fish for dinner. Return to Cape Town the next morning.
The exact program can only be established on the day of departure, all depends on the wind! We may sleep in Hout Bay the first night or sail right through the night and spend two nights in Simon's Town.

DASSEN ISLAND (2½ days
Dassen IslandA very popular destination for sailors who love a peaceful anchorage in a bay surrounded with abundant sea life. We set sail around midday and head north, past Robben Island, along the West Coast. After 6 to 8 hours we will reach the sheltered "Huisbay" at Dassen Island. We spend the next day exploring the shore and beaches (large colony of Penguins) on our rubberduck (National Parksboard regulations do not allow us to go ashore). During the day we catch Crayfish (in season only), or if the crew is enthusiastic, we take a sail around the island. Return to Cape Town early the next morning. Depending on the wind, we arrive back in Cape Town "somewhen" in the afternoon or evening.

LANGEBAAN LAGOON (2½ to 4 days)
This exciting trip to the beautiful lagoon of Langebaan starts the same way as our Dassen Island venture. We anchor at Dassen Island for the first night, catch a few crayfish and then continue North towards Saldanha Bay. Depending on the time available we have the options to:
- Anchor in Saldanha Bay for the night
- Moore up at Club Mykonos
- Anchor at one of the safe beaches in the lagoon and proceed the next day to Kraalbay, undoubtedly the most beautiful anchorage along the West Coast. There we may swim, fish, snorkel and relax.
Return trip to Cape Town can be arranged by car (from Langebaan) or you sail back with us.
