Rugby union-SARFU looks to courts to stop government inquiry

JOHANNESBURG, Oct 9 (Reuter) - The South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU) are to take legal action in an attempt to stop sports minister Steve Tshwete setting up a commission of inquiry into the game.

SARFU announced on Thursday that they had been advised that the planned government inquiry infringed their constitutional rights.

They issued a statement saying: ``The terms of reference and ambit of the commission are so wide, vague and ambiguous that it would be impossible for SARFU to prepare for the commission and to know what charges, allegations or accusations it would be required to meet.''

Tshwete announced the commission at the end of September after a six-month task force investigation had failed to find conclusive evidence to support allegations of mismanagement and financial irregularities within the game.

SARFU will now seek a court order to prevent the establishment of the commission which was due to start work on November 18.
