Rugby union-Llanelli ask Welsh Rugby Union to help pay fine

LLANELLI, Wales, Oct 7 (Reuter) - Llanelli asked the Welsh Rugby Union on Tuesday to help them fight a 10,000 pounds sterling ($16,100) fine after the club's violent European Cup clash with French side Pau on September 13.

European Rugby Cup (ERC) fined both sides 20,000 pounds on September 30, asking them to pay half the amount within 21 days. The remainder will be payable only if one of the clubs offend again before the end of the season.

Llanelli officials have refused to pay the fine, saying there is nothing in the competition rules to show ERC can apply such sanctions.

On Tuesday, Llanelli chairman Ron Jones said the club had asked the Welsh union for its help.

``We have written to the Welsh Rugby Union asking them to intervene,'' he said.
