Rugby union-Holders Brive score convincing win over Bath

BRIVE, France, Oct 5 (Reuter) - French international fly-half Christophe Lamaison piled up 19 points to lead title-holders Brive to a convincing 29-12 victory over English side Bath in a European Cup match on Sunday.

Lamaison, one of three Brive players who claimed they were injured in a post-match brawl with Pontypridd players three weeks ago, scored four penalties, a drop goal and two conversions while winger Pascal Bomati and former French captain Alain Penaud added a try apiece.

Bath, who gained a narrow 27-25 win in their home clash with Brive, had Jonathan Callard for all their points. The international full-back converted each of his four penalty attempts.

Brive took an early lead when Lamaison scored a penalty in the second minute but Callard replied with a penalty of his own a minute later.

In the 19th minute, Lamaison started a swift move which ended in a try for Bomati, the winger's fourth try in this European Cup campaign.

The rest of the first half turned into a kicking duel between Lamaison and Callard, Lamaison scoring three penalties and Callard adding two more to his tally.

Bath trailed 19-9 at the break but Callard reduced the arrears with his fourth penalty in the 48th minute.

Penaud, better known as a fly-half but making his debut at full-back, wrapped up the French victory with 12 minutes left when he scored his side's second try with a solo run.

Brive, with three wins and a draw, have revived their hopes of finishing top of group C and playing their quarter-final at home. They play Scottish Borders away next weekend.

``We are on our way to the top...This success is encouraging for the rest of the competition,'' Penaud said.

``We wanted this win,'' flanker Olivier Magne said. ``Our defence was strong and we were lucky to have our gunner Lamaison, who helped us to this win.''
