Rugby union-France to drop Carbonneau for indiscipline

PARIS, Sept 30 (Reuter) - Scrum-half Philippe Carbonneau, who Welsh side Pontypridd claim sparked their European Cup brawl with Brive, will not be included in the French squad for the Latin Cup to be announced on Monday.

France team manager Jo Maso said Carbonneau was already in the selectors' bad books for indiscipline during last season's tour of Australia.

``International players must be beyond reproach on the field and off it... So, Philippe Carbonneau has been discarded for the Latin Cup,'' Maso said.

Holders France, Argentina, Italy and Romania will take part in the second Latin Cup from October 18 to 26. France won the inaugural tournament in Argentina two years ago.

Carbonneau did not play in the return between Pontypridd and European Cup holders Brive in Wales on Saturday, a 29-29 draw, after having his nose broken during a brawl between rival players in a Brive bar after the first match which Brive won 32-31.

The scrum-half played in both tests on tour against Australia in June, a series France lost 2-0.

The selectors will announce the French squad for the Latin Cup on Monday. Maso said Carbonneau's position would be reviewed for the visit of South Africa for two tests in November.

Harlequins' French flanker Laurent Cabannes's fine European Cup form could earn him his first national call since March 1996.

The selectors said that although their chief objective was building a team for the 1999 World Cup, they were not ruling out players because of their age.

Cabannes, who will be 35 in 1999, scored two tries in his English side's 30-18 win at Bourgoin on Saturday.

His French team mate Thierry Lacroix kicked 15 points to boost his chances of a first call since February 1996.
