Durban Thekwini ... The early days ... a History
The Rotary Club of Durban South was chartered on 26 November 1954 and the Rotary Club of Durban Musgrave on 24 March 1978.
On 28 January 1998 the members of the two clubs who have a combined history of 63 years held a joint meeting in the G.M. Room, Musgrave Library to discuss amalgamation. At the meeting it was unanimously agreed that:
A celebration evening meeting was held on 18 March 1998 at the Royal Natal Yacht Club (picture below). In the presence of 1997/98 District Governor Mike Strong (a member of Durban South in 1969) and his Ann, Barbara, PP Bob Stapleton gave a brief history of Durban South and PP Rodney Goodall gave an account of Durban Musgrave.
1997/98 Durban Musgrave President Mike Ferry inducted Norman Sheriff and Ivor Scorgie as members of Durban Musgrave. Then a special moment, 1997/98 Durban South President Laurence Rae inducted all Durban Musgrave members into Durban South. The making of a new and vibrant club with a new found spirit.
At our regular meeting on Wednesday 13 May 1998 1997/98 President Laurence Rae announced that our new name, Durban Thekwini, had been approved by the Rotary International Board of Directors.
It was now time to start recording our History with a renewed sense of Service Above Self.
