THE DURBAN THEKWINI EDUCATIONAL TRUST

formerly THE RACE RELATIONS EDUCATIONAL TRUST (NATAL)

These are ALL realities in our community. However, the Race Relations Educational Trust funds an Academic Support Programme to address these issues.

THE STUDENTS NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

The AIM of the Academic Support Programme is to provide students who have academic ability with additional tuition to gain entry into tertiary education.

300 students from Grade 11 and 12 (the last two years of school) are selected, on merit, from schools in the greater Durban area. The students come from a disadvantaged background, have been recommended by their Principals and complete a Mathematics and English screening test.

Students attend a thirty week course which is held on Saturday mornings and a two week winter school in July. Tuition covers English, Mathematics, Physical Science, Biology, Accountancy and Economics. All the teachers are qualified and experienced and follow the syllabus provided by the South African Department of National Education. They are assisted by Tutors who are students engaged in tertiary education.

The programme allows students access to superior teaching and to facilities which they may not have access to in their own schools, for example, equipment for science experiments, films of prescribed English texts and other audio and video material.

A study of the annual matriculation (final school examinations) results have shown that students on this programme consistently achieve results significantly higher than the national average. Furthermore, students have become prominent in many professional field, for example, Medicine, Chemical Engineering, Accountancy and other technological fields.
