The Rotary Club of Durban Thekwini
Community Service
The Durban Thekwini Educational Trust, formerly The Race Relations Educational Trust (Natal). This is the largest Educational Trust in our District and is under
the control of Durban Thekwini Rotarians. The Trust funds an Academic Support Programme. The Aim of the Academic Support Programme is to provide students who
have academic ability with additional tuition to gain entry into tertiary education. THE STUDENTS NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
The Ilungelo Labadala Project in Inanda This project was initiated by the Ilungello Labadala
committee in Inanda and they subsequently requested help from TAFTA. Land had been
acquired in the Amaoti Section. Phase 1: A section of the land had been levelled and
fenced and a large prefabricated unit has been moved onto the site. This was being used at
present as a training centre, office and for pensioners' activities. The next part was the
building of a kitchen, a toilet block and a shop. Plans have been submitted for approval
and it is hoped to finish this phase by December 1999. This has been funded by a Rotary
International Childrens Opportunity Grant and by Rotary Clubs in the United Kingdom.
Phases 2 and 3: A community hall and cluster housing to be used by aids orphans, the
elderly and the disabled within the next two years.
The Community Centre at the Montebello Mission
Outstation The club, an
anonymous benefactor and the Archdiocese of Durban co-funded the building of the Community
Centre.
The Umlazi Old Age Home now
known as the Kanaan Home The
home was built by funds raised by our Club. The home has recently been painted. The
kitchen is being built and we are supplying the bricks and mortar. A gas stove and sink
have been bought and installed. The Province is now paying the salary of the Matron and
two nurses. The home has been nurtured for some time by the club, however it is gratifying
to see that the facility's Management Committee is showing a certain amount of
independence in the day-to-day activities.
Their Daily Bread Fund All members of the club are members of the Fund's
Board. The Fund runs a feeding scheme and is involved with basic functional literacy.
Inner City Feeding Scheme,
Pietermaritzburg
A deepfreeze unit was donated to The City Mission of the Boshoff Street Methodist Church in Pietermaritzburg to complement their Inner City Feeding Scheme. The feeding scheme currently provides basic meals for upwards of 200 people on a daily basis. In an article in the 23 March 1999 issue of The Natal Witness, Reverend Dr. Jacobs, minister at the Inner City Mission, thanked the Fund for the donation and stated the deepfreeze unit will help the Feeding Scheme to provide relief to many more hungry people.
In August 1999 the Durban Thekwini Board approved R 20 000 for upgrading the kitchen at the Feeding Scheme. The Rotary Club of Pietermaritzburg East is overseeing the development on behalf of our club.
