Midi Files done by me

Lots of people have great midi sites, some of them absolutely HUGE and beautifully maintained; I couldn’t begin to compete with them so instead I’ve put on my site some of the midi files I have programmed myself for use by my band which you might also find useful, they’re also mostly files that I haven’t been able to find anywhere else. None of them have melody lines as they have all been used in a Live context, they’re also not perfect in that they’ve been programmed with not too much correcting done afterwards in order to keep the feel. This also means that some are just Bass and Drums as guitars are played live, but if ya can use ‘em feel free….Cheers and enjoy.   Dave

The Midi Files                 If you like any of these you’re welcome to take them, if you have any comments I’ll welcome those too, I’m always into any discussions about music, music technology, MIDI, Logic Audio, Sequencing in general, Recording techniques etc so my email is cricket@iafrica.com   OH yes and while we’re at it I’m cricket (or baseball on valium as you Americans say) mad as well, as you can tell from the email address……….

My favourite band of all time along with the Who, this is Genesis’ Abacab

The Beatles had to get a look in; I loved the beginning of the album so I did an Abbey Road medley

I wasn’t overkeen on Clapton during his Delaney & Bonnie period but I still did a rough version of After Midnight

My favourite album by Roxy Music I decided to do the title track Avalon

As far as I remember this was the only “single” success that Cream had. This is Badge

At some stage one has to do an Elvis, we chose Burning Love , Ya probably gotta know the arrangement for this!!!

Title track of one of Joe Cocker’s mid-period albums Civilised Man

A song Henry liked so I did a programme for John Paul Young’s Love of the common people

This was (along with blinded by the light) my favourite Mannfred Mann song Davy's on the road again, PS did anyone know he’s a South African??

I enjoyed programming this as all Vince Clarke’s (of Yazoo) instruments are Monophonic, very few chords, but please  Don't Go just yet

Best song  Chris de Burgh ever did……OK except for Spanish Train…..Don't pay the Ferryman ,bit rough as I did it in a hurry but it had a vibe

I’ve always been a Police and Sting fan, I did Don't Stand so Close to me a long time ago, probably some of this one on the net, but here ‘tis anyway

Bloody Ozzies get in everywhere, Cricket, Rugby, Dammit they’re good Down under ,Lots of versions of this around too…this is mine

Depeche Mode…hmmm…never quite got into most of their stuff but I loved Get the Balance Right, so I did it!!!

Spandau Ballet’s Gold, good song, not a lot more to say really

Someone asked for Van Morrison’s Have I told you Lately as their 1st Dance at a wedding about 10 years ago, I ended up liking the song

Henry liked Robert Palmer’s Johnny and Mary, this was before the days of midi, but we transferred it from Oberheim drum box, (remember them) which I originally did it on to MIDI , …please don’t ask how!!

Foreigner’s Juke Box Hero, great song to do live if your singer can hit the notes, saw ‘em do it live in J’oburg…… Brill!!!!

Originally did a send up of Culture Club’s Karma Chameleon but people got so cross we had to do it properly

Back in 1985 in Port Elizabeth I recorded Mark Wilson, a fellow SA muso’s, album. “Roadsongs” (would you believe in a garage at the Holiday Inn there), he covered this tune and while we were at it I also fell in love with Jackson Browne’s The Loadout

There are a few Midi’s of Jethro Tull’s Locomotive Breath out there, this one I did ain’t perfect but it’s got balls!!! (but no guitar…you gotta do that!!!)

My favourite Stevie Wonder song is………MasterBlaster

Bit of da Blues man… my version of John Mayall’s version of Me and my Woman

No not the Temptations song (there’s lots of those around) but the Madness song …My girl

Only Bass and Drums on this file of the Knack’s My Sharona

I f you have to play Laid back then there are few nicer songs to play than Chris Rea’s On the Beach

Chris de Burgh’s Patricia the Stripper    nuff said !!

Alan Parsons…Prime Time sorry ..no guitar here you’ll ave to play it again

No guitar on the Golden Earring classic Radar Love, this was actually not programmed by me but done brilliantly by another SA musician “Marshall Harmse” (producer of ABBOTT & CRABB’s 2nd album)

Supertramps School, this starts where the drums come in (no harmonica or guitar intro) listen for the keyboard solo played by an old friend “Pete Hattingh”

Another band I was never really into, but I did enjoy R E M’s Sidewinder….dammit  no guitar again!!!

A good singalong; I programmed it but we never really played Susanah much

Now we’re talking, this was a Steve Winwood song, which Joe Cocker covered and as usual did better than the original, it’s Cocker’s version of Talking back to the night

Ub40’s 1st album came out in about 1979 or so and I still think that Tyler from that album was one of the best things they ever did,,,, sorreee no geeet

The best band I ever saw live was The Who, 1972, Melody /Maker concert at the Kensington Oval, They finished the set off (literally) with Won't get Fooled again I don’t think many people programmed this one, my mate in Sodwana (one of the most beautiful places in the world) Mark White originally did the synth part which I used totally and the Drums, if you have a Sound Canvas try it on there as there are Cutoff NRPN’s embedded in the synth part which work quite nicely ….PS please play the guitar part

So I had to get corny sooner or later, when I got married to my darlin’ Susie at the wedding I serenaded her with Cilla Black’s You're my World…this was that programme, and here…for now..endeth the midi files

Now that we’ve got to this point I’d like to say that if you want SERIOUS midi files then speak to Pete or Jan at HandsOn MIDI South Africa, they literally have it ALL
