3rd Pinelands Cubs
Under Construction
Akela's Chat
Hi everybody! You should all be aware now that there is a new Akela, after Pat Ashbolt retired at the end of the third term. We thank her for her looong and dedicated service (50 years) that she gave to the pack. Pat is by no means out of cubbing completely, she is now our assistant District commissioner and her new cub name is "Raksha" who is as we all know the mother wolf in the Jungle Book. We are glad she didn't leave us completely.
I think all of you know who I am, but for those don't here goes. My name is Ondine and I am Trout's wife. I have never been involved in scouting before, but I was a founders Guide (this was the top award a Girl Guide could get at the time) I was involved in Guiding for about 15 years. I love the outdoors - hiking, camping etc. I am a Horticulturist by trade and work for and indigenous Seed Company. We have a son - Bradley - who is now two years old. That is about all about me and now onto the cubs.
As I have only recently taken over the driving seat there is not much to tell. We went to the Planetarium in the Third term, which was work towards the star badge. Last term we went to the Fire Station, which "Sparky" organised for us - THANKS.
This term seems to be getting shorter and shorter as I look at the calendar. We are going up Table Mountain on the 3rd of November for the night and hope to do lots of stargazing and stalking. Badge wise - David has earned his Pets badge and Mathew has earned his Bird badge, as our Scout shop does not have it in stock. Mathew we hope to get it soon.
Our numbers are very depleted at the moment, but the boys we do have are keen and quite dedicated. If any one knows of boys who would like to join Cubs please give me a ring.
I think this is about the lot
Yours in cubbing
Akela
CUBS VISIT TO THE EPPING FIRE STATION
We left at 9:30. Mr Latskey showed us the fire engines. They converted an old petrol truck in to a water tanker. We all got to look into heat seeking devices and Mr Latskey slid down the pole in the fire station.
One of the rules is "BE PREPARED", as you need quick action. They have a kitchen, dining room etc. etc. to cater for all the shifts.
You need to be disciplined and you have to be able to understand a fire. You must not make a fire near dry grass, (trees, material and paper), fuel, oxygen and a spark is needed to make a fire. Take either fuel or oxygen away and the fire stops. You must be fully trained to be a fireman.
