Why Does the Skin Tan?

Because the skin acts as the body's shield, it has a built-in defense system against the sun's rays. Keratin, a fibrous protein located in the skin's uppermost layer, absorbs much of the UVB rays and some of the UVA rays. The rays that make it through this initial barrier actually help stimulate the production of a protective layer. This protective barrier that the skin constructs appears as a tan. The tan that many believe is a sign of a healthy complexion is actually the skin's way of protecting the body from the sun's harmful rays by producing melanin, a darkening pigment that acts as a shield against further harm. Melanin production varies from person to person based on genetics. However, UV radiation is not adequately screened without added protection and overexposure results in skin damage.
