Guiding in the Drakensberg

 collage5.jpg (20130 bytes)

The Drakensberg is southern Africa's mightiest mountain range. Running for about 200km, it forms the main watershed, and is a natural border between the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal and the kingdom of Lesotho. With several peaks higher than 3000m in altitude these mountains are often snow covered in winter and provide local climbers with almost alpine conditions. While the rock (basalt) comprising the higher peaks is not always very sound, the awe-inspiring spires just beg to be climbed. For the winter enthusiast several areas offer waterfall-ice, and there is even some skiing to be done. For the trekker, an escarpment traverse, in part, or along the whole spine, is of world class standard. The altitude and remoteness make these trips serious but richly rewarding.
