Manhattan Mansions : 11 Broad Street
Architects : Frohlich
c.1937
Yet another example of 'Style Moderne', Manhattan Court reflects the concept 'a machine for living' literally as she seems to be styled on ocean liners and trains. Window recesses are given streamlined styling while the odd porthole is visible too. The original owner, a Mrs Hawkeby, had lived in Manhattan New York and was obviously influenced by the trend there. The building lost its original wooden windows frames in 1991 to aluminium ones while the foyer paneling, the victim of woodborer, was renovated in 1997. Horizontal strips
were placed across the new windows to restore the buildings original 'pacey' look.
The foyer, entered via chrome and glass Deco doors, contains some excellent Art Deco sconces and two streamlined wood benches with metal inlay. Two accompanying flower pot stands are done in the same style.
