Broadwindsor : 7 Broad Street
Architects : WC Moffat & Hirst
1934
Broadwindsor dominates its site on the corner of Broad Street and the Victorian Embankment. It is 'Style Moderne' with strong verticals and an impressive foyer canopy. It is, however, the two Art Deco flying birds which stand erect at the very top of the building which make it remarkable. The central facade includes curved windows again, like Willern Court, reminiscent of machines built for speed. The foyer is in a poor state. New aluminimn street doors have been installed with no regard for the overall style. Parts of the old 1930's foyer have been lost under uninspired maintenance although the lift anteroom doors in black wood and chrome remain as does an old 1930's clock above the superviser's kiosk. The rear of the building has a chunky Art Deco fire escape.
