Landing at worcester in winter
This page is dedicated to flying at Worcester, the mountains of the Cape allow us to do the most incredible flying that one can ever imagine. In summer "Ridge Racing", flights of 1000km are done regularly flying at speeds of 200km/h at altitudes of 2000' agl. In winter we have wave conditions, a "Diamond Height" is like a Sunday walk in the park.
I am fortunate to have my aircraft at Worcester and share the sky with some of South Africa's best Pilots., these are the "Ridge Racers"
Alan O Regan Sven Dolf Peter Farrel Cornelius
Quinton Hoole Randal Cullen Ari Cotton Otto Tonges Martin Grunet

These are my friends that I enjoy flying with on the ridges. I have learned so much from them and enjoy flying with them. Sadly Randall has left us and returned to Canada to fight bears and enjoy blizzards :(((((
Reinhold and Martin flew the first 1000km flight on the ridges in a DG500 showing us the potential of the Cape Mountains. They also pioneered the low and fast flying technique that we use. Allan that did the first 1000 km, Sven the second and I was the third person to do 1000km flight on the ridge in a single seater non self launcher.

The best explanation of how to fly the ridges is written by Alan O' Regan found at this URL "Chapter 22"

A closer view during a wave flight.
Looking into Stetyn's kloof. During winter we get aero towed onto this northern face. On a good day wave bars are set up in phase with the ridge and it is possible to climb into the TMA. In most cases the height gained is about 6000' AGL, fly forward to Badsberg and expect to be rather low and hope to connect with a wave bar before entering the Slanghoek Valley. Slanghoek is almost guaranteed to deliver wave, you just got to find it.

Kleinberg is often a life saver when returning from Porterville, you need about 3500' for a safe final glide home. Landing options from here back to Worcester are limited.

Flying north along the Voorberg with Dasklip Pass ahead. this picture has a special meaning to me, I took it the first time I managed to get onto the ridge. We normally fly below the ridge where the maximum energy is.
